Video and Images in the Classroom

When you were in elementary and high school, how were videos used in the classroom? What successes do you remember? What failures do you remember? How might you use video in your classroom? What sites do you use now for viewing videos?

  1. Video's were used in my classroom by the teachers showing video's to books that we had read. I remember being able to understand the books better after watching the video's. I remember that not all the video's were well done and represented the books the way that they should. I would use video's to allow kids to make presentations and video's from books, poems and other English/Language Arts lessons we cover. I use Utube to view video's as of right now, but am venturing out and finding different ones.

  2. 1. I felt we watched videos to fill time. We would sometimes watch videos that went along with units we were studying. Other times we would watch fun videos that had nothing to do with anything we were studying.
    2. In high school English classes when we studied Shakespeare it made it easier to understand what was going on in the book or poem by watching a video.
    3. The rest o fthe videos really didn't help foster deeper understanding.
    4. In my classroom I do plan to use video. I think with teh new technology and videos available today it can really help learners of all styles.
    5. youtube and tumblebooks (for book videos)

  3. I do not recall many videos in school. A treat was to watch a movie. Although I was in high school with the dinosaurs. Technology is so advanced and you have so much creativity. AWESOME Educational videos, informational videos, and sharing videos are are tools to keep the students interested in the lesson.

  4. When I was in school, videos were used as a way to give the class a treat, while giving the teacher some time to grade large projects. I am not sure if I will use many videos in my classroom.

~I remember very little about movies in Elementary School besides for fun. I do remember ALOT in middle school; especially "Billy Nye the Science Guy" movies. Which I thought then and still think now is great!

    What successes do you remember?

    ~Bill Nye.

    What failures do you remember?

~The OLD movies on like space and cells.

How might you use video in your classroom?

~Finding the RIGHT entertaining video can be extremely useful. Showing a lot of movies in Language Arts classes as well. With movies turned into books everyday; it would be a nice reward to students for finishing a book.

What sites do you use now for viewing videos?

    ~Youtube.com

  8. When I was in school, videos were mainly used for either supplementing a lesson or filling time. The use of videos as a supplement to the lesson was a great way to reinforce the idea that was being taught. However, the time-filler videos were of no use in the classroom other than to give students and teachers a free day.
If I were to use videos in my classroom, they would have to serve a purpose. The instructional time that is given to a teacher does not always meet the needs of the lesson. It would be unwise to waste any time with videos that serve no purpose.

  10. I always like when it was video day, because I knew that we did not have to do anything. Some people would sleep through it and the teacher could set there and do nothing. As for the success, I always found it to be a useful tool because it is hard to learn about war, people, by someone just lecturing about them as opposed to viewing it yourself.

Since I am a history major I would use videos a lot in my class, because most of the great and not so great times in our history are available for view and I believe it is a great way to show students about the past.

I would probably use YouTube or something like that, I would make sure that I know where and how to find what I need. I remember a teacher in high school trying to show us something on the computer and brought up a inappropriate site in front of the whole class, I do not want to suffer that fate.

  11. When I was in elementary I remember watching videos like Donald Duck in Math Land and scientific videos about nature and animals. Also I remember watching movies like The Diary of Ann Frank and Where the Red Fern Grows after we read the books. In High School videos or movies were more of a bonus or a “lazy day” when the teacher really didn’t have anything for us to do. I’m probably going to use videos in my class because it so easy to find really good interesting educational videos now that apply to pretty much any subject area. I use sites like Youtube, Teachertube, and the Discovery Channel to find interesting videos.

  12. When you were in elementary and high school, how were videos used in the classroom?

In Elementary school, I remember watching Reading Rainbow, videos from the Discovery Channel, and Bill Nye. In High School, I don't remember watching that many videos. I agree with everyone else, I think they were mainly recreational movies used as a "Free Day".

    What failures do you remember?

The Failures I remember was not being able to pay attention; especially if it was something from the Discovery Channel that didn't interest me, or if the other students who weren't interested were talking, made it difficult for the rest of the class to pay attention.

    What successes do you remember?

The successes I remember was if the video was interesting, such as Reading Rainbow. Reading Rainbow showed real kids enjoying reading, instead of an adult telling you to read. That's crucial to get kids to want to do something, is if they can see real life situations, and it wasn't an informative movie. Also, watching movies after we've read the books was fun.

How might you use video in your classroom?

I would use what the kids are watching now -or when I do get a job! Reading Rainbow was what was on when I was a kid. I would use videos from National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, but instead of having the students sit there and watch it, I would either have them fill in a worksheet as they watch the movie or stop the movie periodically and talk about it. If they're aren't interested, there's no sense in continuing.

  13. When you were in elementary and high school, how were videos used in the classroom?

In high school we used to watch Bill Nye the science guy a lot in our science class. The videos always pertained to the subject we were covering at the time and everyone always enjoyed good watching that show.

    What successes do you remember?

The golden rule for our class was mostly if ya didn't fall asleep the video was good. Which most of us usually did save for science, because it was always so interesting seeing how things worked as well as the crazy examples that were always given.

    What failures do you remember?

Failures usually happened with videos in the lit classes, watching hamlet or Romeo and Juliet would usually knock out half the class into a deep slumber. The other half would usually start talking amongst themselves thus anyway that was trying to listen could never hear the whole movie.

How might you use video in your classroom?

I would use videos that would pertain to the subject at hand, but keep them interesting. Did you know there are actually two versions of Romeo and Juliet? The classic, then there's the more modern day version, I've seen both and have to say the modern day held my attention a lot better than the classic. Could be due just to the funniness of these modern day people speaking like its the Medieval times again.

  14. I really dont remember using videos in elementary except as a reward or during a party day. I remember watching historic clips in highschool. They helped me Quite a bit. I like using videos because it helps me present the information in an audio visual way. By using videos followed by a writing exercise and somthings hands on I involve more of the learning senses.

  15. A majority of the movies and videos that I remember being shown in the classroom were mostly from a social studies class, History, Government, and Psychology clases. I always enjoyed the time away from book work and I think it offers the students information in the form that they enjoy. I appreciate learning things from movies that you may not even notice until they are pointed out to you, for example historical events. I will definatly utilize movies and videos in my classroom. Anything that keeps the students interested in learning is a benefit in my opinion. I use Youtube for my personal usage and sometimes I find it is useful for lesson planing, but I am currently looking for other resources that are directed more towards education.

  17. When videos where used in classrooms while I was a student, we watched a variety of films from documentaries to blockbusters. In a spanish class we watched Shrek in Spanish to see if we could identify any words. In history class I remember watching documentaries on different historical events. Most of the films were a success in being additional information to the subject. However, when I watched Shrek in Spanish, that was the first time I had seen Shrek while everyone else had seen it before. I was confused on what was going on at all.

If I were to use videos in my class, I would provide narration so I can point out information that I want students to remember.

I use YouTube if I want to pull certain scenes of a video, other then that, I am not aware of any particular website I could stream videos from.
